Teaching AP Government in a Shortened Semester- Week 2 of Remote Learning with Civil Liberties

Well, I think the dust has settled long enough for me to see the finish line. After a two-week spring break, a week of teacher work and lots of meetings, and last week getting all the students on the same page, I’m ready for content.

Oh, and the webinar from Trevor Packard with our new test.

After taking a weekend, to give myself some space from everything, I was able to figure out our week. I have 5 weeks to cover Unit 3 (because I was one who never taught it during the first half of my class, which is a semester-long) and reassure my students that they do not have to get crazy on their AP Government test. We need to review the rubric for argumentative essays and do some work on writing and scoring. We need to practice the concept analysis. We also need to cope and live in the current world. It’s a lot.

I hope this finds you well. This is the “schedule” for this week for all second-semester seniors. Please feel free to email me and let me know if you need something different. I’m here to make sure you learn because understanding government and politics is super important, even more in a pandemic. 

This week’s learning objectives and goals: 

  • Provisions of the U.S. Constitution’s Bill of Rights are continually being interpreted to balance the power of government and the civil liberties of individuals
    • Explain the extent to which the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the First and Second Amendments reflects a commitment to individual liberty
    • Explain the implications of the doctrine of selective incorporation.

Podcasts, webinars, the AP Review that Jenifer Hitchcock is doing are all wonderful ways to connect content.

Remember, you don’t need to do what you would in a classroom setting. You don’t have to be “on” all the time. You need to do what’s best for your kids, even if it means questioning what is being asked of you. Because we don’t know what is happening with some of our kids. YOU know YOUR kids.


Getting ready for the test?

For my classes (I have about 100 students taking the test), we have a separate Google Classroom just for the test takers. They are following along with the AP Review, and we are spending time in small groups reviewing what they need as well as me live streaming review of the rubrics, looking at example writing, and practicing.

It’s really mostly up to the students as to what they need and want. Luckily, we reviewed both required pieces of writing prior to the spring break.
